Format Overview

Understanding APNG

Animated Portable Network Graphics: A modern, lossless alternative designed to replace traditional GIF animations.

What is an APNG?

APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics) extends the standard PNG image format to allow multi-frame animated sequences. First initiated by Mozilla, it retains all the visual strengths of PNG while supporting fluid, frame-by-frame animation.

Unlike GIF's restrictive 256-color palette and binary transparency, APNG offers full 24-bit true color alongside an 8-bit alpha channel, delivering razor-sharp gradients and smooth, semi-transparent edges over any surface.

Key Advantages Over GIF

24-Bit True Color
Renders 16.7+ million colors without pixelation, harsh color dithering, or quality loss.
Alpha Transparency
Blends smoothly with transparent backgrounds; eliminates unsightly white jagged halos.
Fallback Support
If an engine lacks APNG parsing, it simply displays the initial frame as a standard PNG image.

Recommended Use Cases

  • UI Elements & Spinners: Loading spinners, toggle triggers, and micro-interactions on dynamic dark/light interfaces.
  • Brand Identity & Logos: High-definition animated brand marks requiring crisp vectors and exact color values.
  • Chat & App Stickers: The default format of choice for rich sticker packs in Telegram, LINE, and Apple iMessage.

Web Implementation

APNG is natively supported across all modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). Embed it exactly like any standard image file:

<!-- Direct standard embedding -->
<img src="animated-graphic.png" alt="Dynamic animated preview" width="360" height="auto" />

MIME Configurated: CMS UINJKT supports these files using the standard image/png header.
